Construction - Wales

Improving resource efficiency in the Welsh construction industry

The construction industry in Wales makes a substantial contribution to the Welsh economy, with an estimated turnover of around £3bn per annum. The sector is made up of over 10,000 businesses, of which 90% are small enterprises.

Construction waste is a big issue in Wales as the construction sector produces around 6 million of tonnes of waste annually, 50% of the total national waste arisings.  In 2007 around 2.5 million tonnes of construction and demolition waste was handled by waste facilities in Wales, and it is estimated that about half of this was sent to landfill.  WRAP is supporting government and industry initiatives designed to address issues of waste minimisation and increased waste recovery.
