Utility Industry Agreement

In 2005, it was estimated that the utilities sector generates about 4.8 million tonnes of trench excavation waste and about 2.5 million tonnes was landfilled. Not generating waste and recycling waste arisings can deliver savings by avoiding new material and waste disposal costs.

Voluntary Agreement

The Utilities Industry Agreement establishes a common approach to improving the environmental impact of its work through improved material resource efficiency in street works. The sharing of information will enable a step change in the amount of recycled materials used and reduce waste to landfill. It comprises a suite of documents as shown in the image below.

It links to  the Draft Strategy for Sustainable Construction,  a joint industry/government strategy which includes the objective of developing voluntary agreements and initiatives between the construction industry and its clients with the aim of reducing the carbon footprint and use of resources.
