Consultation for Quality Protocol

As part of the Waste Protocols project, the Environment Agency and WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme), working with The Composting Association, Renewable Energy Association and the agricultural industry, have recently launched a public consultation on a draft Quality Protocol for the production and use of products from the anaerobic digestion of source-segregated waste.

This Quality Protocol, which currently will only apply in England and Wales, could make it easier to collect, store, transport and re-use this biodegradable waste, saving businesses time and money and helping the farming community to diversify. It should stimulate the market for the use of anaerobic digestate products as a fertiliser, soil conditioner and a material in land restoration and reduce the amount of organic waste being sent to landfill. The Scottish Government are a corresponding member of the Quality Protocol and are currently reviewing whether or not it will apply in Scotland.

A 3-month online consultation for the draft Quality Protocol for the production and use of products from the anaerobic digestion of source-segregated waste is already underway and will be completed on 27 June 2008. Details are available at http://qpyr1.dialoguebydesign.net/.
