Delivering Courtauld Commitment 3 Targets

In 2013 WRAP asked Courtauld Commitment 3 (CC3) signatories to trial new approaches to enable them to help deliver the CC3 packaging target.

The results and learning from these projects are to be shared with the grocery sector for consideration and potential action.

Six projects were commissioned and some results are highlighted below and featured under ‘related documents’:

  1. A scorecard for suppliers to use which provides an indication of the recyclability of its packaging (Morrisons).
  2. An approach to product damage mapping in the supply chain and a packaging change to tackle food waste (Tesco trial on eggs).
  3. A packaging intervention aimed at extending product life (Tesco trial on mushrooms).
  4. A benchmarking exercise to compare the carbon content of secondary packaging for products sold by major retailers.
  5. An in-market trial to assess the closed loop potential for black food trays using detectable black ink (Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s). Case study and technical supplement available.
  6. A trial to understand suitability and potential of reintroducing post-consumer glass into container glass (Marks & Spencer).
