Lord Henley backs Courtauld as communication remains key

02 July 2010

This week I attended the inaugural meeting of Courtauld Commitment 2 signatories with Lord Henley, the new Environment Minister.

What a treat.  A room full of the UK’s leading grocery retailers and manufacturers – 36 of them now - putting aside their commercial rivalries to work together to reduce the sector’s environmental impact.

Lord Henley’s attendance was a major plus.  He said Courtauld was a great example of how a responsibility deal can work without the expense and burden of legislation because companies can be innovative and energetic while tapping into our (WRAP’s) expertise

I think the signatories really appreciated that endorsement.  Naturally, it matters to them that their efforts are noted and appreciated.  I’m sure Lord Henley will now spread the message about their great work so far.

Speaking to signatories was very interesting.  They clearly see communication as a crucial aspect of Courtauld as we progress the agreement.

And they were talking about communication at many different levels – within the supply chain, with consumers, local authorities and all the UK Governments.

That’s where WRAP is making a real difference.  Our engagement with those very audiences is helping to make the UK more resource efficient and less wasteful.  Long may that continue.
