Let's waste less

This year marks the 5th Anniversary of Recycle Week - although for the first 2 years, we only celebrated recycling on a single day instead of an entire week.  Over the years, we have gained more support and recognition for the Recycle Now campaign.  The event has grown in popularity to where it is today, with an entire week supported by local authorities, businesses, schools, retailers and brands, the ever-expanding recycling and reprocessing industry and most importantly, you – the public.

The popularity and success of Recycle Week mirrors the commitment from all of us over the past five years to make the most of our resources and we should all feel really proud of how much we’ve achieved.  In the past 5 years alone, since the launch of the Recycle Now campaign, we’ve saved over 30 million tonnes of CO2 – equivalent to taking a third of our cars off the UK roads for a year – so recycling really is making a difference!

The theme for this year’s Recycle Week is, ‘Let’s Waste Less’ and the week’s activities are designed around the many, small ways we can each reduce our waste which, when taken together, makes a big difference.  The good news is that two-thirds of us now consider ourselves committed recyclers, and we are currently recycling 34% of our household waste across the UK.  From recycling more of our everyday items like glass and plastic bottles, to reducing our food waste, re-using carrier bags or trying out new things like home composting, there’s a lot we can do to help cut back on the amount of waste we send to landfill.

A great way to get involved, find out what is happening in your area and pledge your support during the week is to visit the Recycle Now website where you will find some great tips on wasting less - and who knows, you may even save money in the process.

Hi Liz, We're really excited to be taking part in recycle week and will be blogging all about our adventures over on our site: http://myzerowaste.com we've undertaken a declutter of our garage. 18 months ago this would have involved hiring a skip - for recycle week, however, we'll be putting as little into landfill as possible and rehoming or recycling whatever we can. It will be an interesting exercise, if not a little daunting!

Hi Liz. Have you ever heared about linerless technology? Every year 4.000 square kilometers of liner with silicone coating are wasted. Million of paper labels are applied on film (shrink wrap paks and pallets) and then tons of film becomes contaminated so no more recycable. Many people do not know that to grant film recycling it is requested to applied a plastic label (plastic on plastic).

Great to see GMTV making a huge push this morning to promote recycling. l think that the demonstration of the pellets and the flakes was a significant message for promoting the case that recycling works. It was great to see you on there too and your reply about shipping recycling to China was a crucial one. I hope that Recycle Week is a success. I'm certainly enjoying the activities arising from my challenge. I'd be interested in finding out how the results of the campaign week are measured, e.g. does WRAP get official recycling figures from councils following the campaign week, or is analysis done by interviewing the public regarding their attitudes?

Hi Karen - Glad to hear you are enjoying your Recycle Week challenge. The campaign is being measured in a variety of ways including the number of pledges, the method for pledging e.g. via the Recycle Now website, Facebook, SMS or in person at events, and also awareness of Recycle Week. We are starting to receive some great photos of events happening around the country and these will be posted on www.recyclenow.com in the next few days.
